MEET OUR BOARD
The Black In School Coalition thrives under the leadership of an exceptional board that knows how to drive impactful change.
Led by Board Chair Dr. Margaret Fortune and Vice Chair Dr. Ramona Bishop, our coalition is grounded in strategic expertise and a shared vision for equitable education. Dr. Fortune, who oversees seven public charter schools, has pioneered innovative programs like early college high schools, allowing students to earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree. As a nationally recognized education leader, Dr. Fortune’s commitment to closing the achievement gap is a guiding force in our advocacy work.
Dr. Ramona Bishop, our board’s vice chair and a former superintendent, is known for her success in student-centered reform, particularly through full-service community schooling. Dr. Bishop’s experience advocating at national forums—such as the White House—ensures that our work is not only transformative but also rooted in best practices for student success and safety.
Our coalition is strengthened by board members like Adonai Mack, CEO of Child Action, Inc., who brings a wealth of policy and advocacy experience from his background as a legislative advocate for education. His insights into complex education issues allow us to effectively navigate California’s policy landscape.
Dr. Alicia Montgomery serves as the CEO for Gateway Public Schools. Prior to stepping into the Executive Director role at Gateway, Alicia served as Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Powerful Public Schools, one of the state’s foremost organizations leading education reform and equity. An expert in literacy, school turnaround, and closing achievement gaps for Black and Brown students, she has received numerous awards and accolades over her 30-plus year-long career in education. She is also a published author and is considered a premier thought leader on education equity and improvement.
Adding further depth to our leadership is Debra Watkins, founder of A Black Education Network and the Dr. Frank S. Greene Scholars Program. Debra’s commitment to improving educational outcomes for Black students, particularly in STEM, has led to programs that empower students to excel academically and pursue college degrees in fields with underrepresented Black professionals.
Dr. Angelia Barfield, an original founder of Black Students of California United (along with Debra Watkins,) focuses on youth programs and leadership development, reflecting our coalition’s dedication to empowering young voices.
Joette Spencer, a former San Bernardino educator, brings invaluable insights rooted in her hands-on experience with students and families. Her advocacy and deep commitment to children’s success ensure that our coalition remains student-focused.
